Western Europe Faces Second Major Heatwave

French authorities and regional neighbors have issued severe weather warnings as a second intense heatwave hits Western Europe, with temperatures forecast to exceed 40C across multiple nations. Météo-France has placed 53 departments, encompassing 36 million people, under orange alert as the region experiences its second extreme temperature event of the year.

The current meteorological pattern is driven by a persistent high-pressure system trapping hot air across the continent. This atmospheric stagnation is expected to force significant operational adjustments, including the curtailment of output at four French nuclear power plants due to rising river temperatures used for cooling. Rail operator SNCF has already cancelled 71 intercity services, while educational institutions have rescheduled examinations to mitigate health risks.

The heatwave is projected to peak early next week, with national heat indices potentially reaching all-time highs. Spain and Germany are also reporting extreme conditions, with Spanish temperatures expected to remain above 40C in southern valleys and German authorities implementing early school dismissals. The event is anticipated to persist until at least mid-next week, with night-time temperatures in some areas failing to drop below 25C, compounding the strain on public health infrastructure.
