Bank of England Expected to Maintain Rates
The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee is widely expected to maintain the benchmark interest rate at 3.75 percent during its Thursday announcement in London. This decision marks the fourth consecutive meeting where policymakers have opted to hold rates steady, citing a stabilization in inflation data despite ongoing geopolitical volatility.
The decision follows official data from the Office for National Statistics showing UK inflation held at 2.8 percent in the year to May. While the rate remains above the central bank's target, the easing of food price inflation and the recent diplomatic developments regarding the Strait of Hormuz have reduced immediate pressure for further monetary tightening. Lower oil prices, driven by expectations of restored maritime trade, have mitigated the worst-case inflationary scenarios previously anticipated by the committee.
Despite this pause, the transmission of energy costs remains a significant factor for the medium term. A scheduled 13 percent increase in the Ofgem energy price cap in July is expected to accelerate domestic inflation throughout the summer. Consequently, while the benchmark rate may remain unchanged in the immediate term, the delayed impact of wholesale energy costs on household bills suggests that inflationary pressures will persist through the third quarter.
