SpaceX has invested over $15 billion in the development of its Starship rocket, according to the company's IPO registration reviewed by Reuters on May 1. This expenditure significantly surpasses the approximately $400 million spent on its Falcon 9 rocket, highlighting the scale of the Starship program as SpaceX aims for a fully reusable launch system.
The substantial investment underscores Starship's critical role in SpaceX's future operations, including the deployment of larger batches of Starlink satellites, human missions to the Moon and Mars, and the potential launch of artificial intelligence computing satellites.
The company plans to begin launching its latest generation of Starlink V3 satellites in the second half of 2026, with Starship designed to accommodate up to 60 of these upgraded units per flight, a notable increase from the two dozen typically carried by Falcon rockets.
8 billion in 2024. Despite 11 test flights since 2023, which included both failures and advancements like catching the Super Heavy booster, significant technical hurdles remain. These challenges include establishing extensive ground infrastructure, managing substantial fuel and water requirements for frequent launches, and perfecting in-orbit refueling capabilities to achieve the target of thousands of launches annually.
