Ebola Infections Surge as Outbreak Accelerates Across Congo

Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo confirmed 1,307 Ebola cases and 377 deaths as of June 30, 2026, marking the country's 17th outbreak of the virus. The viral haemorrhagic fever has now spread to four provinces, including the recent detection of a fatal case in Haut-Uele, a region bordering South Sudan and the Central African Republic.

The transmission mechanism is primarily driven by traditional funeral practices involving direct contact with infected remains, which remain a significant vector for the virus. This cultural barrier is compounded by severe logistical constraints, as aid workers report critical shortages of protective gear, rapid test kits, and medical supplies. Furthermore, ongoing civil unrest and community mistrust have resulted in physical attacks on treatment centers, complicating containment efforts.

The government has implemented a ban on public gatherings across four provinces to mitigate transmission risks. While officials cite public health necessity, the directive has drawn criticism from opposition figures who characterize the measure as a politically motivated attempt to suppress upcoming protests.

With the outbreak now affecting the entire northeast region, home to approximately 15 million people, Institute of Biomedical Research is currently prioritizing contact tracing to stabilize the transmission chain.
