FDA Authorizes Over-the-Counter Continuous Glucose Monitor for Pediatric Use

Federal regulators have authorized the nonprescription sale of the Stelo Glucose Biosensor System for children aged 2 to 18. The device is intended for pediatric patients managing diabetes via oral medication and for general health monitoring related to diet and exercise. It is explicitly not approved for children requiring insulin therapy, those on dialysis, or individuals with a history of problematic hypoglycemia.

The system provides glucose trend data every 15 minutes via a smartphone application, with sensors requiring replacement every 15 days. Regulatory guidance mandates that pediatric use must occur under adult caregiver supervision. Clinical risks identified include potential skin irritation, localized infection, and discomfort at the sensor site.

Medical professionals emphasize that while the device increases data accessibility, it does not replace clinical oversight. Concerns persist regarding the potential for misinterpretation of glucose trends by non-specialists, as the sensor measures interstitial tissue glucose rather than direct blood glucose. The device is not equipped with alerts for low blood sugar events, necessitating caution for users with specific medical conditions.
