Dallas Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland has been cleared by medical staff to take part fully in training camp after foot surgery in January. Bland said he has returned to unrestricted physical activity, marking a shift from rehabilitation to on-field work ahead of the preseason.
The clearance follows two injury-interrupted seasons that limited his availability and slowed his production. Officials have not reported any setbacks during his most recent training cycle, and the Cowboys are preparing for him to rejoin the secondary as a key contributor.
Recovery follows January foot surgery
Bland’s recovery plan included surgery intended to address structural issues linked to recurring problems that affected his availability. He missed 15 games across the previous two seasons, with the sequence of absences beginning in 2024.
In 2024, he was sidelined for 10 games. That was followed by a five-game layoff in 2025, leaving the defensive back in a stop-start rhythm as he worked back from repeated injuries.
Production benchmark set in 2023
Bland’s return will be judged against a high standard established earlier in his career. In 2023, he set an NFL record by returning five interceptions for touchdowns, a level of game-changing production that made him one of the unit’s most impactful playmakers.
Across his first two professional seasons, Bland recorded 14 interceptions, underscoring his ball production when available. The Cowboys now face the practical question of whether that form can be sustained after an extended period with limited game action.
How the Cowboys will evaluate his readiness
The organization is expected to use the preseason to assess how Bland responds to full-speed work and whether his performance indicators move back toward 2023 levels. The team’s evaluation will be shaped by his ability to handle volume, recover between sessions, and maintain the movement and burst needed at cornerback.
For Dallas, moving Bland from rehab status to full participation is also a roster and planning milestone for the secondary, which has had to account for his absences. Training camp and preseason reps will provide the clearest measure of how quickly he can resume a primary role, and whether the recent stability in his recovery continues once contact and competitive snaps increase.
