UK Government Department Withdraws from X Platform

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has ceased all activity on the social media platform X, citing concerns regarding the proliferation of misinformation and the platform's impact on democratic discourse. This move marks the second government department to formally exit the platform, following a similar decision by the Attorney General’s office.

Government policy remains decentralized, with Downing Street confirming that individual ministers and departments retain the autonomy to determine their own social media engagement strategies. While some departments have withdrawn, the Prime Minister’s office continues to maintain a presence on the platform, though it remains under ongoing review.

Political opposition has criticized the withdrawal, arguing that government departments should actively engage with digital platforms to counter misinformation rather than exiting them. The decision follows broader concerns among officials regarding the platform's moderation standards, the use of generative AI tools, and the potential for content to exacerbate social division.
