Iran has launched missile and drone attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait, describing the move as a response to recent U.S. airstrikes, according to a Fortune report on Sunday. Brent crude futures surged over 5% on the news, with US Treasury futures also rising as investors fled to safety. The strikes represent a major escalation amid ongoing fighting over the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran recently attacked two vessels, according to the report.
The direct attack on neighboring Gulf states, both key U.S. allies and oil producers, dramatically widens the scope of the regional conflict. Iran's actions directly threaten a critical artery for global energy supplies and increase the probability of a broader confrontation. Citing Iranian sources, Fortune reported that Tehran also threatened a “complete halt” to peace negotiations, a severe blow to diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions.
All eyes are now on Washington and other regional powers for a response. The United Nations Security Council is expected to convene an emergency session to address the aggression within the next 24-48 hours.
