BOJ decision nears after Tokyo CPI tops forecast

Asian rates traders face two Friday catalysts, a BOJ statement window and an RBA governor speech, as policy paths in Japan and Australia tighten. Reaction pending.

Japan’s August national inflation data are due hours before the Bank of Japan statement. Tokyo core CPI rose 1.8% year over year in August, above a 1.7% forecast and closer to the BOJ’s 2% target; the core-core measure reached 2.0%, data showed.

BOJ window frames rate risk

The BOJ does not publish a fixed statement time in the same way as many developed-market central banks. The decision is expected in the 0230 to 0330 GMT window, with Governor Kazuo Ueda scheduled to speak at 0630 GMT.

The late inflation print gives investors one more price marker before the statement, but the policy focus is on the rate path after any increase.

If the BOJ confirms a faster normalization track, then Japanese yields may face upward pressure, the yen may draw support from rate differentials, and equity sectors sensitive to discount rates may remain exposed.

Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Michele Bullock is due to speak at 2330 GMT. The RBA raised its cash rate by 25bp at its first three 2026 meetings, on February 3, March 17 and May 5, then held policy on June 6 and August 11.

Rates pricing cited for the next RBA decision puts another increase at around 70% to 75%. The forward call is the September 28–29 RBA meeting: if pricing holds into that date, Bullock’s remarks may shape front-end Australian yields before the board decision.
