Louis Vuitton and UNICEF Auction Unique Unity Time Object

Louis Vuitton and UNICEF are marking their ten-year collaboration with a unique mechanical desk clock. This piece, named the Unity Time Object, will be available for online bidding at Sotheby's Paris from June 9 to 18, 2026. All funds generated from the auction will be directed to UNICEF, with Louis Vuitton covering all production and shipping expenses. Art director Matthieu Hegi, who spearheaded this initiative, chose to focus on high horology rather than jewelry for this charitable endeavor.

Since 2016, this partnership has raised over $28 million globally for vulnerable children. The proceeds from this sale are earmarked for health and education programs, as well as initiatives empowering young girls in crisis zones. This project aims to be a significant milestone in the brand's ongoing commitment to social responsibility.

The clock's spherical design symbolizes UNICEF's principle of equality. Its geometric form, appearing identical from every angle, visually reinforces the idea that all children deserve the same fundamental rights, regardless of their background.

Louis Vuitton developed the Unity Time Object in collaboration with the Swiss clock manufacturer L’Épée 1839. Its transparent construction showcases the intricate mechanics, while its extended power reserve is also a notable feature.

Auction Details and Charitable Structure

The Unity Time Object will be offered in an international online auction at Sotheby's Paris between June 9 and 18, 2026. The catalog lists the opening bid as "Upon Request." The primary goal is for all proceeds to go directly to UNICEF, with Louis Vuitton's commitment to cover production and shipping costs ensuring the funds are fully channeled to the charity.

Previous joint projects focused on emergency aid and clean water. This time, resources will be allocated to health and education, alongside programs designed to empower young girls in challenging environments. Officials stated that the auction seeks to attract collectors and amplify the impact of the donations.

Design and Craftsmanship Highlights

The clock's aesthetic draws inspiration from the Monogram football created by the brand for the 1998 World Cup. Its open steel cage evokes the interlocking hexagonal and pentagonal panels of a football, while the gold brackets and rivets holding the structure together recall Louis Vuitton's iconic metal hardware found on its travel trunks. Time is indicated not by traditional hands, but by two rotating gold cylinders housed within the steel cage.

The mechanism boasts an eight-day power reserve, with its internal workings visible from the exterior. Special windows on the casing enhance readability; the upper hour cylinder is encircled by 144 brilliant-cut white diamonds, and the lower minute cylinder by 120 black diamonds. This contrast creates a clear visual distinction. There is no battery or digital display; winding and time setting are performed manually using a gold-plated steel key that attaches to the casing.

Collector's Accoutrements

To protect the piece, a custom carrying and display case was handcrafted at the brand's historic atelier in Asnières-sur-Seine. Designed with a "Trophy Trunk" approach, this box shares the same artisanal details as the brand's cases for sports trophies, presenting the clock as a display object.

Accompanying the clock in the auction will be limited-edition REBONDS books and special Monogram leather footballs signed by the brand's global ambassadors, BamBam and Felix. This curated selection aims to enhance the item's collectible value and appeal. The outcome of the June auction and the total donations raised will guide future projects of the partnership. Following the sale, the distribution of funds to on-the-ground programs will be monitored.

Future Outlook and Impact

The success of this auction could set a precedent for future high-value collaborations between luxury brands and humanitarian organizations. The focus on specific, impactful programs for girls in crisis areas reflects a targeted approach to philanthropy. However, the exact amount raised and the full extent of its impact will only become clear after the auction concludes and funds are deployed.

This initiative also highlights the growing trend of luxury brands integrating social responsibility into their core strategies, moving beyond simple donations to create unique, high-value items that attract both collectors and philanthropists. The transparency in fund allocation and the detailed craftsmanship of the Unity Time Object underscore a commitment to both cause and quality.
