Meteor Causes Widespread Alarm in Northeast

A meteor's disintegration in the atmosphere above Massachusetts and New Hampshire recently triggered brief panic across the region. Residents reported their homes shaking following a loud sonic boom, which occurred after a bright fireball was observed streaking across the sky.

According to statements from NASA, the celestial object fragmented at an altitude of approximately 64 kilometers, traveling at an estimated speed of 120,000 kilometers per hour. The agency calculated that the energy released during this fragmentation was equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT.

Sonic Boom Mistaken for Earthquake

Following the atmospheric event, a significant boom was heard across numerous communities, particularly in Massachusetts and the broader New England area. Many individuals initially believed they were experiencing an earthquake due to the shaking of their residences. However, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) later confirmed that no seismic activity had occurred, attributing the tremors to the meteor's sonic explosion.

Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden, intense flash of light in the sky, immediately followed by a powerful explosion sound. The incident was captured by various security cameras and mobile devices, providing visual and auditory evidence.

NASA Confirms Natural Origin

Officials from NASA clarified that the object was not associated with any known meteor shower, nor was it space debris or a re-entering satellite. Their assessment concluded that the meteor was a naturally occurring celestial body.

Experts indicated that the majority of the meteor likely burned up upon atmospheric entry. There have been no confirmed reports of any substantial fragments reaching the ground.

Recalling Past Meteor Events

This recent event brought to mind the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor incident in Russia, which resulted in thousands of injuries. However, specialists noted that the recent occurrence over the United States was considerably smaller in scale compared to the Chelyabinsk event.

Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or significant property damage were reported. Nevertheless, the sonic boom generated by the meteor caused temporary fear among local inhabitants.
