A recent research study published in a prominent medical journal indicates that chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) was identified in a minimum of 25 percent of former National Football League (NFL) players who passed away between 2016 and 2021. This degenerative brain condition, currently only detectable after death, affects individuals exposed to repetitive head trauma. The investigation utilized brain donations and demographic information from 878 players who had participated in at least one professional football game.
The reported 25 percent prevalence is regarded as a conservative estimate. Statistical modeling employed by the researchers suggests that the actual rate of CTE among this cohort could be considerably higher. A significant correlation was observed between CTE and dementia, with over 90 percent of samples classified as Stage IV CTE also having clinical diagnoses of dementia.

Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, who served as the lead author for the study, underscored that the cumulative force from head impacts remains the primary factor contributing to the development of CTE.
